Open from early March until mid April 7 days a week including all public holidays 9am-4pm.  For details on the season's progress go to

Picking your own chestnuts and walnuts is a fun activity for the family or just the opportunity to find fresh high quality nuts for eating or cooking. There are two seasons for walnuts. During the season in autumn at both Mt Irvine and Mt Wilson, several properties open during March and April each year for mature ripe walnuts and chestnuts and they invite people to visit and pick their own nuts.

So, come and pick your own walnuts and chestnuts. There are established nut orchards with large, good quality, fresh chestnuts and walnuts. Chestnuts need gloves to pick up the spiky shells which have fallen to the ground, and break them open to get the chestnuts. Walnuts are just picked from the ground.

Drive around the villages and look for signs outside properties where you can pick nuts. Some properties are regulars each season and other properties advertise only when they have nuts available for picking.

The regular properties open each season are listed below. It is a good idea to call first and check when they are open.

There are public toilets at Silva Plana (just as you enter Mt Wilson), the Fire Station, Founders Corner, Waterfall Reserve and Cathedral Reserve. There are no shops, cafes or ATMs in either village.

This year (2019), the first weekend the farm will open is Saturday 9 March & Sunday 10 March. It will then be open every weekend through to Easter. Opening hours are from 9am to 4pm and no booking is required. But please note, it's open WEEKENDS ONLY.

For more detailed information, please see:
Nutwood Farm's website,

The farm also has a Facebook page (Nutwood Farm) and can be found at @nutwoodfarm on Instagram. Regular updates are posted on both these sites.
Nutwood advises that unfortunately there are very few walnuts this year, but plenty of chestnuts!

There's plenty of information on the website about what to bring, but basically you'll need: sensible closed walking shoes, water, sunscreen and sun protection, plus wet weather gear if it's looking wet. Please also arrive with at least half a tank of petrol (as there are no petrol stations in the vicinity) - and cash given the farm does not have credit card facilities.

About Nutwood

Nutwood Farm covers 40 acres of land, but the trees are on a flat area spread over about six acres. They have mainly chestnut trees (up to 25 years old) and some walnut trees, all planted by the farm's manager Beverley Carruthers. Nutwood has been in the Carruthers family since the early 1970s and is now onto its third generation of nut pickers!

The farm provides free parking and has limited toilet facilities. (There are also public toilets in Mt Wilson). There are no shops or petrol stations past Bilpin - and nothing at Mt Wilson or Mt Irvine, so make sure you have plenty of petrol and everything you might need!
The farm provides buckets - plus gloves and tongs to help with picking nuts.

Nutwood Farm looks very forward to welcoming you during the 2019 nut season.
