Pick your own walnuts and chestnuts

Picking your own walnuts and chestnuts is a fun activity for the family or just the opportunity to find fresh high quality nuts for eating or cooking. There are two seasons for walnuts. The green walnut season is in December and some properties are open, so you can use this special product for your own favourite family recipes. During the main season in autumn at both Mt Irvine and Mt Wilson, several properties open during March and April each year for mature ripe walnuts and chestnuts and they invite people to visit and pick their own nuts.

So, come and pick your own walnuts and chestnuts. There are established nut orchards with large, good quality, fresh chestnuts and walnuts. Chestnuts need gloves to pick up the spiky shells which have fallen to the ground, and break them open to get the chestnuts. Walnuts are just picked from the ground.

Drive around the villages and look for signs outside properties where you can pick nuts. Some properties are regulars each season and other properties advertise only when they have nuts available for picking.

The regular properties open each season are in the table below. It is a good idea to call first and check when they are open.

Nutwood Farm, 22 Danes Way, Mt Irvine

Follow the YELLOW SIGNS when you arrive at Mt Irvine – they lead you right to NUTWOOD FARM

Nutwood Farm is open for Pick your own Chestnuts and Walnuts each year for six to seven consecutive weekends from mid March to late April.

This year (2024), the first weekend the farm will open is Saturday 9 March & Sunday 10 March.  Opening hours are from 9am to 4pm and no booking is required. But please note, it's open WEEKENDS ONLY and all 4 days over EASTER.

Our Facebook Page has lots of detailed information. Buckets provided.

There's plenty of information on facebook about what to bring, but basically you'll need: sensible closed walking shoes, water, sunscreen and sun protection, plus wet weather gear if it's looking wet. Please also arrive with at least half a tank of petrol (as there are no petrol stations in the vicinity).

About Nutwood

Nutwood Farm covers 40 acres of land, but the trees are on a flat area spread over about 20 acres. Nutwood has been in the Carruthers family since the early 1970s and is now onto its third generation of nut pickers!

The farm provides free parking (next to the orchard) and has limited toilet facilities.  (There are also public toilets in Mt Wilson). There are no shops or petrol stations past Bilpin - and nothing at Mt Wilson or Mt Irvine, so make sure you have plenty of petrol and everything you might need!

The farm provides buckets.  Gloves and tongs will not be provided this year due to Covid-19 so please bring your own gloves to help with picking nuts.

Nutwood Farm looks very forward to welcoming you during the 2024 nut season.

Chestnuts available from mid April to mid May. Gloves and buckets supplied.

Open from early March until mid April 7 days a week including all public holidays 9am-4pm, however Season 2021 closed.  For details on the season's progress go to www.kookootonga.com.au
